January. Thoughts and memories of my trip to New Orleans last January swirl about my mind. The atmosphere, architecture, sounds and sights, bust mostly the food. Time for a taste of New Orleans. Enter my rendition of the muffuletta sandwich. Although it's hard to beat the famous muffuletta from the Central Grocery Co. on Decatur Street, you can make a decent muffuletta with a few ingredients from your local grocery store or deli.
The muffuletta is a sandwich with an olive spread containing green olives, pickled carrots, celery and cauliflower, seasonings and olive oil. If you can not find a muffuletta olive mix you can make your own at home. In this case I chopped green olives stuffed with garlic, green olives stuffed with pimentos and a few pepperoncini. (My grocery store was out of the pickled veggie mix! Treason!) I added a bit of fresh ground pepper and a fair amount of olive oil. Let sit overnight in the fridge.
Since you are not likely to find a muffuletta round at your local grocery, substitute focaccia.
Spread a layer of olive mix atop your freshly baked bread...
...followed by layers of salami, mortadella and provolone...
Tasty little muffuletta, how I love thee!

My mouth is watering... that looks yummy!
Hugs,
Jill

Hi Kim, thank you for sharing. It has been a few years since I have had a Muffaletta. Yum. I too tasted mine in the French Quarter. I am inspired to make Muffaletta for dinner tonight. You have the best ideas for food!
